"Ea got it right and here's why"
Posted on September 11, 2009 at 06:39 AM.
I saw the thursday game of Pitt vs.Tenn.It was a good game.I have an Directv with hd dvr so I recorded it.With all the complaining that I see people doing around here about various issues with the Madden 10.Issues like blocking,penalties...My personal favorite the DB ran a better route than my WR and mirrored him...etc.....I'm gonna go ahead and call B.S. on all the above. Now I dont have any video editing equipment but I can give you a description of a couple of plays that I replayed over and over just to make sure I wasnt looking at a video game.

1)Blocking...If you look at the game film the LT for pitt Missed several blocks....The funny thing was it looked like some of the "wonky" blocking animations that you see on Madden..The LT#68 I believe literally backed up and didnt hit anybody as big ben went down. Also did any one else notice that Pitt only ran for 17 yards....

2)WR/DB interactions....There was a pass thrown to Gage I believe on the left side of the field...He ran about 15 yards and then planted his foot to make a cut,as he planted his foot guess what?....So did the DB it was almost simultaneously!!!Amazing Then the DB jumped the route(like in Madden 10),cut in front of the Wr and batted the ball down as the Wr continued with his catching animation IRL...That is definitely replicated too perfection in Madden 10.I almost couldnt believe my eyes so I replayed it about ten times to be sure...I then thought about it and realized that these are professional atheletes and they do this for a living and it shows.

All I ask is if any one has computer skills and knows how to edit game film please do so and you will find several plays that happend on Thursday that happen on Madden 10.The truth is EA has pros as well and most of them are damn good at what they do.I challenge any one to actually look at NFL game film and tell me that the plays described are not replicated to (near)perfection in Madden 10...go ahead I'll wait...I say "If you don't appreciated Madden 10 for the many things that it has done right then you just don't like football" Oh yeah and before someone tells me it aint perfect my answer to you is... "I know, I'm gonna enjoy it anyways".

I actually saw a couple of broken tackles that looked pro-tak ish and could just hear opponents in M10 saying "I hate pro-take, they never should have broken that tackle" lol. I agree with your take here.

I agree to a certain extent on a lot of your points. DBs jump routes all the time in the NFL and I don't think that most people who play Madden and know football have a problem with that.

The problem is all DBs and LBs seem to have a 42" vertical. This eliminates fades, steaks, and other patterns designed to get your WR behind a DB. This is probably due to the fact that there is no true WR/DB interaction so the programming over compensates for that by allowing DBs to jump high enough to swat ball instead of say a realistic interaction or fight for the ball. If the interaction was more realistic the DB would be in better position to make a play while battling with the WR for the ball.

I know true diehards were gushing after seeing Polomalu make a one handed interception which was very close to the one handed interception animation on Madden. Know this that was a amazing football play by an elite freak of a player. That was the exception and not the norm...but on madden it is a 2 or 3 time a game occurence.

Its kind of hard to draw a conclusion about the line blocking last night because that was two disruptive defenses that made both O-lines look bad. Only thing I know is the Madden line play is broken.

Doseyclwn that was not a freak fumble that was a perfect tomahawk chop on the ball that caused the ward fumble. I would love to actually see that in Madden because it happens about 85 to 90% of the time in a real football game. Any runner coming through the lane, or whenever a end or LBer even sniffs a QB here comes a tomahawk chop.

Maddens much improved but needs a lot of work....

I'm enjoying M10 also. Nice writeup! The only thing that sticks out to me that is different from the NFL and M10 is the edge pass rushing. It feels like in the NFL they get at the QB a bit quicker, and can "run the loop". Also, there's no animation in M10 for James Harrison's bench pressing of blockers

EA plays a huge role in influencing the NFL. Earlier this month I blogged about the NFL being outdated, because of the way they force us to watch football from a horizontal perspective (tecmo bowl). If you viewed last night's telecast, you'll find the majority of replays were viewed from the vertical (madden) perspective. For better or worse, EA and madden are expanding.

Hes right.
Ive got a basketball game that doesnt really play like real basketball but the ball going thru the hoop looked exactly like I saw in a real game once. So, no complaints from me.

I absolutely agree with this article. People's expectations have gotten a little out of control. I agree that morphing and things like that should not happen but they do. It is a video game. There will never be a game that will play like the real thing.

The games we have today are absolutely incredible. I have played games for over 30 years and I would have rolled over and died if I had games like this when I was younger. To have real teams, players, jerseys with the material, fans, etc. was only a pipe-dream. I feel today's developers will never catch a break.

People love to hate EA. If it weren't for EA, there wouldn't be sports video games. There wouldn't have been a 2K. EA was the first company to obtain real pro licenses so real players and teams could be used in games.

People need to stop crying and appreciate what we have as gamers regardless of loyalties. Gamers are lucky as hell to have dedicated programmers creating what we want.

Thanks all for your input. My perspective is that of a thirty something year old who has been playing video games before....Nintendo,sega,atari,3do,xbox...If you can believe it I had a system called Collecovision....I even had a system that Cassettes were used..You get my drift...You all should be more thankful now that we have all the current tecnologies...not to mention HD TV's to play them on...

I've been playing games since you had to blow the dust out of cassettes and I've seen the full growth of Tecmo bowl, Madden, NFL gameday, 2k and numerous others. The gripe comes when I see the attention to detail put into a game 5 years ago on a ps2 and to have a next gen game lack these basic things that 2k did so well. I'm not a fanboy I just want to have the most realistic video game possible. I wouldn't care if it was EA, euphoria, or 2k which ever one was able to put out the best game is the one that I would support. Thing is EA has the liscense and I know there will never be a perfect game but there are basic things wrong with their game that you wouldn't expect to see after 20 years of making football games.

"EA was the first company to obtain real pro licenses so real players and teams could be used in games."

Actually it was Joe Montana Football 94 that first had full NFL teams and players. Madden 94 only had NFL teams but not the players association license. I'm almost 100% sure of that.

Anyway, I agree with this write-up. Madden 10 though not perfect is the best next-gen football I've played. I can actually retire 2K5 and Madden 05 now. Thanks for the great effort Ian and the rest of EA crew. Keep up the good work and please for next year, work more on the presentation and it will be a complete game.

Check out the Adrian Peterson Runs.Or better yet the Wr running a poor route resulting in Cutler throwing 4 ints against Green Bay.The Realism is unmatched in Madden 10.

You should also check out how justin tuck ran in untouched by any redskins o-lineman on multiple occasions.

Nice observation. I love the game too. I will love it more with some adjustments coming from the patches.
